The Sears Craftsman 550 Series walk-behind, gasoline-powered lawnmower is a four-wheeled, single-cylinder, four-cycle rotary lawnmower with a 21-inch cutting swath. Fresh motor oil is important for this mower’s Briggs and Stratton engine to have a long life, which is why the manufacturer specifies replacing the crankcase oil with 20 ounces of new oil annually or after every 25 hours of the mower's operation. A particular engine oil must be used, however.
Engine Oil Type
The owner’s manual of the Craftsman 550 Series lawnmower specifies using a detergent-type motor oil with an API service classification of SG-SL. The viscosity grade to use depends on the air temperature. If you will operate your mower at a temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, then use SAE 30 weight motor oil. If you will run the mower at a temperature below 32 degrees, use SAE 5W-30 multiweight motor oil. Multiweight oil can be used at warmer temperatures, but check the mower's oil level more frequently than normal if you use a multiweight oil because it has an increased consumption rate.

The Craftsman 650 Series rear wheel drive lawn mower is named after the Briggs & Stratton engine that powers it. The engine powers both the rotary blade -- via direct drive -- and the self-propelling rear wheels, by means of a drive belt. In order to keep the combustion chamber free of particles that can damage the piston seals and to keep the piston properly lubricated, Sears recommends changing the oil every season or after every 25 hours of use.

1
Run the engine until all the fuel is used up. By doing this, you'll avoid having to drain the gas tank. If you just filled the tank and need to drain it, use a hand siphon to siphon the gas into an approved gas can.
2
Pull the boot off the spark plug to prevent accidental starts.
3
Place an oil pan on the ground next to the lawn mower on the oil plug side. Remove the grass catcher from the mower, if there is one attached. Unscrew and remove the oil cap and set it aside.

4
Tip the mower on its side, using the handle, and let the oil drain into the oil pan. Rock the mower back and forth to free any oil trapped in the corners of the crankcase. Set the mower upright when all the oil has drained.
5
Refill the crankcase with high-quality SAE 30 motor oil. Pour the oil into the crankcase in small amounts, frequently checking the oil level with the dipstick attached to the oil cap. The crankcase takes 20 ounces of oil. Stop pouring when the dipstick level reads 'Full.'
6
Screw the oil cap back on and tighten it hand tight before reconnecting the spark plug, adding fuel and starting the engine.
Things You Will Need
- Hand siphon
- Gas can
- Oil pan
- SAE 30 motor oil
Tips
- If you use the mower in temperatures colder than 32 degrees Fahrenheit, fill the crankcase with SAE 5W-30 motor oil instead of SAE 30 oil.
- Dispose of the used oil by taking it to a mechanic, garden center or the local dump for recycling.
